Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced a plan to invest up to £2bn over the next five years in artificial intelligence (AI) activities in the United Kingdom. The stated aim of the investment is to expand access to computing resources used for AI development, with a focus on supporting economic activity and scientific research.
At London Tech Week, AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su outlined planned collaborations intended to support the UK’s AI and computing research ecosystem, including applications in scientific research and public-sector use cases.
The initiatives are aligned with the UK government’s AI policy direction, including the AI Opportunities Action Plan and AI Hardware Strategy, which focus on developing AI infrastructure, supporting technical skills, and encouraging AI adoption across sectors.
UK government representatives responded positively to the announcement, viewing it as supportive of ongoing efforts to develop AI infrastructure and research capacity. The investment is also expected to contribute to skills development and research activity across multiple fields.
AMD announced a collaboration with Imperial College London aimed at supporting computational science research that depends on large-scale computing. The work includes areas such as healthcare research and climate modelling, with an emphasis on improving the efficiency of AI models and scientific computing workflows on AMD systems.
AMD is also working with Oriole Networks on the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) Scaling Inference Lab, led by Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA). The collaboration focuses on addressing AI infrastructure limitations by combining photonic networking technology with AMD computing hardware, with the goal of supporting a large-scale AI system using photonic networking.
In addition, AMD and Dell Technologies are working with the University of Cambridge on expanding AI infrastructure in the UK. This includes development related to systems such as the Zenith AI supercomputer and the planned Sunrise fusion AI system, which are intended to support research applications including healthcare and fusion energy studies.
Overall, the announced investment and partnerships are positioned to expand computing capacity and research collaborations within the UK AI ecosystem, involving government, academic, and industry participants.
