The Green Grid reviews new ISO standard on Resource Efficient Data Centres

The Green Grid will convene at Siemens Business Park in Brussels on 15th-16th October for the 2013 edition of its EMEA Forum where, among other sessions, it will review the new ISO/ IEC standard on Resource Efficient Data Centres that adopts large tranches of The Green Grid’s work in the field of data centre metrics.

The agenda for the EMEA Forum 2013 focuses on resource efficiency in the data centre, an area in which The Green Grid continues to play a leading role in the development of metrics that are employed around the world.

The centerpiece of the EMEA Forum 2013 will be The Green Grid’s examination of the new global ISO/ IEC standard on Resource Efficient Data Centres. This new standard will incorporate Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), a data centre resource efficiency metric that has been developed and refined by The Green Grid since it initially proposed the measure in 2007. In that time, it has become globally accepted and widely used within the industry.

Professor Ian Bitterlin, EMEA Technical Work Group Chair at The Green Grid, said: “The Green Grid has been working closely with international standards bodies, as well as the European Commission, to help establish standards that will stand the test of time and offer invaluable guidance on best practice to data centre operators. The adoption of PUE into the new ISO standard is vindication of many years’ hard work and testimony to the positive impact that it has had on the industry. We are continuing to work to see if other Green Grid metrics might also be suitable for inclusion.”
The Green Grid’s work with the European Commission on various data centre projects will be the focus of another presentation at the EMEA Forum 2013, alongside sessions on data centre life cycle analysis, power system harmonics, the impact of European environmental policy on data centres, and eco-design regulations for servers and storage.

The Green Grid is offering attendance at the EMEA Forum 2013 free of charge to representatives of both member and non-member companies. EMEA Marketing Committee Chair Roel Castelein said: “In line with The Green Grid’s status and mission as a non-profit organisation, and its commitment to promoting an open exchange of ideas and information, it was felt that it would be appropriate to invited all interested parties to attend at no cost – whether they are members or not. In addition to providing updates on the activities of The Green Grid’s various work groups and the Forum will be a valuable opportunity to network with fellow IT and sustainability professionals and learn more about best practice in a number of key areas of resource-efficient IT.”
