MariaDB simplifies web-scale deployments adding new platforms

Latest MariaDB Enterprise handles complex deployments with ease

MariaDB Corporation, formerly known as SkySQL, a recognized leader in open source database solutions, today launched a new version of MariaDB Enterprise. The subscription product combines certified, tested, and easily installed binary distributions of MariaDB with advanced tools and comprehensive support services to speed up complex deployments and simplify ongoing maintenance.

MariaDB Enterprise is built from the MariaDB community project, the fastest-growing open source relational database that is application compatible with MySQL, the world’s most widely adopted database software. The version launched today supports new platforms, including IBM’s highly scalable Power Systems architecture, and introduces new capabilities including a sophisticated Notification Service that simplifies upgrades and speeds security alerts, certified binaries, and easy to use configuration options.

Today’s release of MariaDB Enterprise strengthens the company’s leadership position as recognized by Gartner in its highly-competitive operational database Magic Quadrant and delivers everything customers need to confidently deploy and manage MariaDB in complex, business-critical environments. A second version of the product, MariaDB Enterprise Cluster, adds tools that make high-availability clustering for MariaDB easy to deploy, monitor, and manage.

Patrik Sallner, CEO of MariaDB Corporation, said: “This new version of MariaDB Enterprise is confidence in a box. Web-scale applications are a commonplace element of enterprise IT, but selecting a data infrastructure that meets the web-scale challenge is complex.”

“With exciting new platform support, convenient notifications, hardened, certified binaries, and easy configuration, MariaDB Enterprise delivers a powerful solution to the web-scale database challenge. It blends the innovation of cutting-edge, open source technology with proven tools and services, and decades of real-world implementation experience by our talented team.”

The following provides more technical details on the latest enhancements:

New Platforms
Joining forces with IBM, MariaDB Corporation now fully supports MariaDB Enterprise on IBM’s Power Systems platform thus expanding options beyond the Intel x86 architecture. Now, customers have a new database weapon in their arsenal to scale-out applications on multi-terabyte, multi-core POWER8 servers optimized to handle the most demanding workloads.

In addition, MariaDB Enterprise is now optimized to work with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and openSUSE Linux platforms. The new platforms join a comprehensive list of supported platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu Linux, and a range of community Linux distributions, as well as Microsoft Windows.

Customized Notifications
The new MariaDB Enterprise Notification Service matches unique customer configuration and version data with change logs for new releases and security notices. The Notification Service then crafts tailored emails, which detail the specific enhancements and fixes relevant to each subscriber. Now MariaDB Enterprise customers can quickly and easily make informed decisions on when to upgrade to new releases and apply critical fixes, based on their individual usage data.

Certified Binaries and Advanced Configuration Options
MariaDB is built on open source innovation. The community edition of MariaDB includes some of the industry’s most advanced database technology, but it incorporates both mature and cutting-edge, experimental technologies. By contrast, MariaDB Enterprise includes certified binary packages containing only tested and proven features, as well as critical backported fixes from the latest community edition, carefully curated by an experienced engineering team. On top of these high-quality binaries, MariaDB Enterprise packages new, optimized configuration files and all supported optional components. The option installation system prevents administrators from installing unsupported components and plugins without their active approval. These features, coupled with MariaDB Corporation’s support and consulting services give enterprise customers the assurance they need to build their most challenging implementations and biggest opportunities on top of MariaDB Enterprise.
