EWE TEL selects Infinera

Infinera and EWE TEL have announced the selection of the Infinera TM-Series to support the next generation of Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) based business Ethernet services and 100 gigabit per second (Gb/s) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for high-bandwidth access to its customers in Northern Germany.

The TM-Series 100 Gb/s based packet-optical network will replace an existing lower speed Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) infrastructure and allow EWE TEL to rapidly provide robust high-bandwidth and differentiated services for business Ethernet and local area network access. In addition, the TM-Series based network will support mobile backhaul offering new service opportunities in the future. The network will extend across Lower Saxony, Bremen and parts of Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia regions of Germany.
The contract was won in partnership with local systems integrator Axians following a competitive and extensive testing process, examining the technology in its laboratory in Cologne.
"After extensive research into the WDM vendors, we selected the Infinera TM-Series metro solution as it met both our technology and budget requirements," commented Heiner Meyer, Head of Strategic Technology Planning at EWE TEL. "Our aim is always to ensure that our customers receive the highest level of service performance with maximum scalability. To achieve this, we are expanding bandwidth on our fiber network as well as cost-effectively increasing the flexibility of service provisioning particularly for business Ethernet services.
The new network gives us the ability to manage the provisioning of multiple high-speed services quickly and easily, and it delivers the scalability for the future. Customers in our region in Germany constantly change their bandwidth requirements and this new network will give us the flexibility to provide bandwidth as required. Once more, it proved valuable to have the consulting and technical expertise of our trusted partner Axians on our side, who understands our challenges and helped us to identify the Infinera solution perfectly aligning with our requirements."
At the heart of the network deployed by EWE TEL is Infinera's extremely low power and highly dense TM-Series and the range of EMXP II packet-optical transport switch modules. The new network has been designed to support services from one Gb/s up to 100 Gb/s and supports aggregated 100 Gb/s backhaul. Services will be migrated from EWE TEL's legacy network to the new network without any interruption in service performance. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
"We are delighted to support EWE TEL with this upgrade," said Nick Walden, Infinera senior vice president of sales, EMEA. "This deployment demonstrates how our flexible approach to packet-optical networking can help operators grow and develop new business services while they adapt to increasing customer demands. The project also shows that the demand for business Ethernet continues to grow and that as part of our metro portfolio of solutions we offer an efficient way of enabling our customers to build high bandwidth networks to meet this demand."
