Guaranteeing lifetime of clinical data

Imaging sciences expert, Imanova, deploys Arkivum.

Imanova, an expert in imaging sciences used in drug development processes, is deploying Arkivum/100™ to provide long-term data archiving services.

Imanova chose the Arkivum service because it is a secure and long-term data archiving solution that is also highly cost-effective, easy to use, auditable and certifiable. It will enable Imanova to take advantage of a managed service that will move static data out of the backup window and off its local storage systems. The Arkivum solution is therefore expected to deliver significant cost savings to the organisation given that each completed project represents hundreds of gigabytes of data.

Imanova is an innovative alliance between the UK's Medical Research Council, Imperial College London, King's College London and University College London. The organisation required a service for the long-term archiving of its vast amount of clinical imaging and related data from MRI and PET scanners along with connected analysis and reports. As this project data is related to clinical trials, the regulatory authorities require that the data and all associated paperwork is retained for up to 25 years in line with the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) and CTIMP (Clinical Trial of an Investigational Medicinal Product) guidelines. Arkivum/100 is the only data storage solution on the market to guarantee 100% data integrity using bit-level data preservation, irrespective of the data volume or the retention period. Arkivum achieves this by storing and actively managing at least three copies of Imanova’s data files in geographically disparate locations.

The Arkivum data archiving service was also attractive because it is a fully managed service that reduced the burden on local IT resources and infrastructure. This means that Imanova can deposit files into the service and have Arkivum undertake all the file lifecycle management and data curation tasks that will be required during the life of the data in the Arkivum service.

John Waters,  Imanova’s Head of IT, comments: “With Arkivum, the costs are not only affordable but also predictable over the long-term. This, along with data integrity guarantees, stable contract and no additional or hidden costs for data ingest or access, made the service very attractive. Furthermore we wanted a service that was more than just “Infrastructure as a service”, we wanted our supplier to check the data integrity, provide an escrow capability and a 100% bit-level fidelity guarantee backed by professional indemnity insurance.”
