The recent announcement of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) European Sovereign Cloud brings opportunities for organisations across Europe. SUSE, an open source solution company, is set to provide its Linux products to customers seeking sovereign solutions within the European Union (EU). This development aims to address growing demands for digital sovereignty.
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is an independent entity operating from within the EU, catering to customers aiming for enhanced operational autonomy and adherence to data residency requirements. This launch comes as IDC forecasts that by 2028, 60% of organisations with digital sovereignty prerequisites will migrate sensitive workloads to secure cloud environments driven by geopolitical uncertainties.
SUSE's strategy aligns with these forecasts. Jason Vaughn, from SUSE Global Cloud, highlighted that, "In an increasingly unpredictable world, our customers rank digital sovereignty as one of their main priorities. For us, sovereignty means maintaining control and resilience through freedom of choice." The firm is participating as a launch partner in the initiative, aiming to support digital sovereignty requirements for organisations across Europe.
SUSE plans to offer its Linux products on the AWS Marketplace, including the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and the SLES for SAP. These options will be accessible via annual subscriptions or pay-as-you-go models, with "bring your own" music licenses debuting in future. This move seeks to complement SUSE’s existing offerings, like the Sovereign Premium Support.
In addition to this, AWS and SUSE have expanded their Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) to integrate SUSE’s open-source solutions with AWS's generative AI services, such as Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q. This builds upon previous ventures like the SUSE Rancher for AWS and the delivery of supplementary packages for Amazon Linux, with the aim of supporting sovereign infrastructure needs for Europe’s regulated industries.
Through this collaboration, SUSE aims to provide open-source solutions that deliver public cloud capabilities while supporting digital sovereignty.
