Wind River has introduced the latest version of Wind River Linux. The new version includes expanded hardware support for the latest ARM, Intel®, MIPS, and Power architectures. Wind River Linux is also updated with the current Linux kernel, toolchain, and user space based on the latest Yocto Project release.

Developed from the Yocto Project open source development infrastructure, Wind River Linux uses the latest Linux kernel as its upstream source to ensure customers have commercially supported access to the newest advancements from the open source community. Adding to existing Intel architecture 64-bit support, Wind River Linux includes ARM 64-bit processing support to further address the constantly growing data size requirements for embedded systems.

“As the Internet of Things (IoT) grows, the compute power and data size demands of all types of embedded systems are rising as well. Providing the ultimate starting point for Linux innovation, Wind River helps developers rapidly implement highly interoperable Linux projects for a variety of platforms that will be ready to tackle the opportunities and challenges arising from IoT,” said Dinyar Dastoor, vice president of product management at Wind River. “With Wind River Linux, customers can be assured they are capitalizing on the latest open source innovations, combined with the reliable global support and long-term maintenance that comes from a leading commercial-grade embedded Linux product.”

“Designed as a common set of tools for embedded Linux development, the Yocto Project was created to give developers a jump start and save them from re-creating the wheel,” said Mike Woster, chief operating officer at The Linux Foundation. “An instrumental supporter for the Yocto Project, Wind River is a champion for Linux innovation.”

Wind River Linux works with Yocto Project Compatible board support packages (BSPs) and software or middleware. Beyond Yocto Project compatibility, Wind River Linux delivers a commercial-grade Linux platform and easy out-of-the box user experience with a rich set of capabilities based on the latest open source technologies, fully integrated development tools, worldwide support and maintenance, and expert professional services. Additionally, Wind River offers software add-ons for Wind River Linux, including a Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) registered offering to meet the strict requirements of the networking and telecommunications industry, and Open Virtualization, an ultra-high performance, open source, KVM-based Type 2 hypervisor providing near-native hardware performance to meet the rising demand for hardware consolidation, scalability, and time-to-market challenges across industries.

Hosted by the Linux Foundation, the Yocto Project is an open source collaboration project providing templates, tools, and methods to help developers create embedded Linux-based systems, regardless of the hardware architecture. Wind River is a Yocto Project founding member and Gold member of the advisory board, and actively holds key maintainer and technical lead positions. Founded in 2010, the Yocto Project has steadily grown with support across the Linux ecosystem from leading hardware and software companies, currently encompassing 26 participating organizations.
