Green Mountain opens new data centre site in the Oslo region

Green Mountain has opened the first 4MW data center at its new data center campus at Enebakk outside Oslo, the capital of Norway. The Norwegian Minister of Regional Development and Digitalization, Linda Hofstad Helleland, is present at today’s opening ceremony to support the establishment and the rapid growth in the Norwegian data center industry.

The site is approx. 20 km from downtown Oslo and is perfectly situated in terms of power supply, infrastructure, and connectivity. The site comprises of 75.000 sqm with a line-of-site capacity of up to 75 MW. This first data center building is fully dedicated to one large international cloud provider and runs on 100% renewable energy. The cold and wet Norwegian climate makes this data center unique in regard to energy efficiency and there are plans for reusing the waste heat from the data center.

"Today marks an important milestone in the company’s history and supports our growth strategy. This location, with availability to diverse international fiber routes and proximity to the capital is ideal for both international hyperscalers and domestic and international enterprises," says CEO of Green Mountain, Tor Kristian Gyland.

This is Green Mountain’s third data center site, in addition to its mountain hall facility outside Stavanger and the facility at Rjukan, Telemark. The construction process started in September 2019 and despite the challenges of Covid-19, the project has been completed according to schedule.

"We experience a massive interest in this site and have already started the construction of a second 4MW building at the site, due to be completed in August next year,"  Gyland adds.

The data center is designed and built with a high focus on energy efficiency, security, and service availability. A local team of engineers with long term experience within operating critical infrastructure is in place.

Norway’s abundance of low-cost renewable power, the government’s beneficial framework conditions, and Green Mountain’s ability to deliver sustainable and high-quality data centers at a rapid speed to market make a strong value proposition. The presence of the Norwegian minister during the opening ceremony demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the industry.

"I am pleased to see that the Norwegian data center industry is growing. Data centers play a fundamental role in the digital economy, jobs creation and our society at large. This has become increasingly clear in recent months. Data centers have not only assisted us in our day-to-day activities, like online meetings and video chats with family members; they are also central in developing existing industries, and creating new ones," says Linda Hofstad Helleland, minister for regional development and digitalisation.

Green Mountain designs, builds and operates highly secure, innovative, and sustainable colocation data centers in Norway. The data centers operate on 100% low cost renewable power and the use of free cooling creates high power efficiency.

  • The data center near Stavanger (DC1-Stavanger) is built deep inside a mountain in a former high security NATO ammunition storage.
  • The data center in Telemark (DC2-Telemark) is in the ‘cradle of hydro power’ in Norway with close proximity to multiple local hydro power plants.
  • The new data center campus at Enebakk (DC3-Oslo) is situated just outside Oslo, the Capital of Norway.
