Future of IT spending: spending to soar to $5.4 trillion in 2025

Gartner forecasts a 7.9% rise in IT spending in 2025 amid ongoing AI initiatives, despite an 'uncertainty pause.'

In a time of global unpredictability, IT spending remains largely unaffected, driven by sustained focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI). According to recent projections by Gartner, Inc., IT spending is forecasted to reach $5.43 trillion by 2025, translating to a 7.9% growth from 2024.

John-David Lovelock, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, highlights the overarching dynamics, "While there is a business pause on net-new spending due to a spike in global uncertainty, the effect is subsumed by ongoing AI and GenAI digitisation initiatives." Lovelock emphasizes that despite an expected slowdown in software and service spending growth, expenditure on AI-related infrastructure, particularly data center systems (expected to grow 42.4%), remains robust.

AI's transformative role is delineated further in Gartner's forecast, which forecasts that spending on AI-optimised servers will significantly outpace that on traditional systems by 2027. Supporting this vision, data center systems are anticipated to experience a surge, with spending reaching $474,883 million in 2025, an impressive climb from $333,372 million in the previous year.

A recent Gartner survey among industry leaders revealed a strategic shift towards embracing AI, despite the "uncertainty pause" hovering over organizations. Approximately 62% of respondents identified AI as a pivotal factor in defining competitive advantage over the next decade. In alignment, leaders cited an increased propensity to invest in technology and business transformation amid challenging circumstances.

However, the "uncertainty pause," a strategic hold on new initiatives marked by heightened geopolitical risks and economic instability, persists. According to Lovelock, this pause is not instigated by budget cuts but a strategic decision. He notes, "Starting early in the second quarter of 2025, there has been an ‘uncertainty pause,’ encompassing a strategic suspension of net-new initiatives across a breadth of departments, including IT."

This cautious stance is reiterated in a Gartner study, which discovered that while 61% of organizations commenced 2025 better positioned than the previous year, merely 24% anticipated outperforming their annual objectives. Economic and geopolitical shocks are cited as the primary risks, as businesses adapt to an array of challenges.

Meanwhile, consistent expenditures such as cloud services demonstrate resilience, counterbalancing the volatile landscape. These findings underscore the intricacies of navigating a complex global context while harnessing the transformative capabilities presented by AI and GenAI.
