In a move to expand its Nordic presence, atNorth, a high-density colocation and customised data centre operator, is set to construct a new facility in Stockholm. This will be the company’s eleventh Nordic data centre, incorporating heat reuse and designed for energy-efficient operation.

The upcoming site, known as SWE02, will be located near atNorth's SWE01 facility, which commenced operations in March 2022. SWE02 will have a 30MW capacity and include heat reuse capabilities, allowing excess heat to be redirected for use within the local community in collaboration with Stockholm Exergi.

Peter Sivengård from Stockholm Exergi noted that such partnerships contribute to resource efficiency and Stockholm's circular economy.

The site is designed to support cluster operations and maintain redundancy by separating client workloads. SWE02 is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Stockholm's Mayor, Karin Wanngård, highlighted that the development could create employment opportunities and contribute to the city’s digital infrastructure sector.

The expansion requires a new electrical substation, which will be constructed by Ellevio to strengthen the local electrical network. Ellevio's Nils Rönnbäck noted that the facility aligns with the region’s goals for fossil-free operations.

AtNorth’s CEO, Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, stated that the company’s expansion responds to demand for operators that integrate technical capabilities with sustainable practices. The company has also announced expansions in Iceland and plans for a future site in Sollefteå, Sweden.

Additionally, atNorth continues to pursue heat reuse initiatives through collaborations in Denmark and maintains colocation partnerships with companies including Nokia, Crusoe, and 6G AI Sweden AB.
