SUSE launches cloud sovereignty assessment tool

SUSE introduces a framework to evaluate digital sovereignty gaps as per the 2025 EU guidelines.

Global open source provider SUSE has revealed a new Cloud Sovereignty Framework Self Assessment designed to help organisations assess gaps in their digital strategy regarding the 2025 EU Cloud Sovereignty Framework.

This tool is a web-based, self-service platform for organisations seeking to evaluate their infrastructure's compliance with the ever-changing cloud sovereignty regulations.

Forrester predicts that digital and AI sovereignty will drive a significant increase in private cloud adoption, expecting doubled year-on-year growth by 2026. Without proven digital sovereignty, organisations might find themselves ineligible for certain contracts with the introduction of the 2025 EU framework.

The Cloud Sovereignty Framework Self Assessment offers an objective Sovereignty Effective Assurance Levels (SEAL) score. This helps evaluate sovereignty across eight objectives defined by the EU Framework, simplifying a manual approach to a quick, 20-minute assessment.

The tool can help address what SUSE's head of Global Sovereign Solutions describes as a "black box" issue in digital sovereignty. It aims to bridge the gap between regulatory policy and the necessary technical solutions.

Aimed at ensuring privacy and trust, the assessment tool stores results solely in the user's browser. This aims to allow even high-security organisations to participate without worrying about data leaks.

Among its key features are:

  • A SEAL system categorising organisations into five assurance levels, facilitating a unified language for discussing risk.
  • Weighted risk analysis: Prioritising supply chain and operational autonomy, spotlighting critical vulnerabilities.
  • Trust-based engagement, lowering barriers for high-security entities by being privacy-first.
  • A concrete, consultative roadmap to transform vague conversations into tangible improvement plans.

The tool provides clarity on current sovereignty levels and offers recommendations to inform future IT investment decisions.
