Tech Mahindra has entered into a collaboration with University College London (UCL) to advance research and solution development in generative AI and quantum computing.
The partnership will focus on areas including world models, domain-specific Small Language Models (SLMs), quantum machine learning, quantum security and industry-specific AI applications. It brings together Tech Mahindra’s experience in large-scale AI model development and enterprise solution engineering with UCL’s research expertise in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. The aim is to explore opportunities across sectors such as healthcare, telecommunications, advanced manufacturing and business services.
Announced at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi, the agreement is intended to support the development of verticalised Large Language Models (LLMs) and world models that can be deployed in enterprises in the UK and scaled internationally. The collaboration will be driven through Tech Mahindra’s Makers Lab, its innovation unit, with joint research teams comprising academics, research fellows and students from UCL alongside subject matter experts from Tech Mahindra.
Harshul Asnani, President and Head of Europe Business at Tech Mahindra, said that as organisations increase their adoption of advanced AI and quantum technologies, challenges around scalability and reliability remain important. He stated that the collaboration aims to address these challenges through co-creation of models and to deliver value for enterprises in the UK and globally.
The collaboration model is expected to be extended across Europe, with discussions also taking place on the potential establishment of a dedicated joint research laboratory. As part of the arrangement, UCL students will have opportunities to undertake internships in areas including vertical LLMs, world models and quantum machine learning, with the objective of strengthening technical skills and expanding participation over time.
Professor Geraint Rees, Vice-Provost for Research, Innovation and Global Engagement at UCL, said the partnership combines UCL’s research strengths with Tech Mahindra’s industry experience to support innovation and practical application. He noted that it also reflects the broader role of UK–India collaboration in developing emerging technologies.
The initiative aligns with Tech Mahindra’s growth strategy in the UK and Europe and its focus on collaboration with academic institutions. Through the partnership, organisations will gain access to its global customer network and research-led innovation connecting academia and industry.
