UK government invests £60 million in new AI labs to support AI development

The UK government has announced funding for new AI labs focused on reliability and efficiency, with collaboration planned between researchers and businesses.

This morning, the UK Government announced the establishment of two new AI labs. Led by the University of Oxford and University College London, the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the UK’s position in artificial intelligence internationally.

With up to £60 million in funding allocated, the labs are intended to improve the reliability, efficiency, and accessibility of AI models. The programme also aims to reduce the development costs of advanced AI systems and support their application across a range of industries and public sector services.

The project will bring together researchers, businesses, and government bodies to accelerate AI development. It will focus on creating AI systems designed for use in real-world environments, with an emphasis on transparency, reliability, and trustworthiness.

The initiative also seeks to support organisations in demonstrating that AI systems operate consistently and transparently. It builds on existing regulatory testing environments, including the FCA Supercharged Sandbox, and incorporates approaches such as explainability, governance, and human oversight from the outset.

As part of the Government’s wider AI strategy, the announcement reflects plans to expand research capacity and support economic development, including in sectors such as financial services, healthcare, and national infrastructure.

It also highlights a focus on developing domestic AI capability under UK data regulations and national policy frameworks, alongside investment in talent and infrastructure.
