Formula E and Google Cloud bring AI to the track

Formula E teams up with Google Cloud to apply AI across racing operations and fan experiences, supporting efficiency and sustainability goals.

Formula E and Google Cloud have announced an extended partnership, with Google Cloud designated as the "Principal Artificial Intelligence Partner" of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The partnership aims to demonstrate how artificial intelligence (AI) can support Formula E's business operations, including race logistics, development, and the fan experience.

This builds on the official agreement established in January 2025. As "Principal Partner," Formula E will integrate additional Google Cloud technologies, including Gemini models, across its ecosystem to improve operational efficiency and performance.

Formula E has previously applied AI in projects such as the Mountain Recharge initiative, where Google’s AI Studio mapped the GENBETA car’s descent, analysing braking zones to optimise energy regeneration over a full lap of the Monaco circuit.

The partnership also includes the introduction of a Strategy Agent in broadcasts, offering insights and predictions during races. This system provides audiences with additional detail on race strategies and driver performance.

Beyond race events, Formula E will use Google Workspace with Gemini to enhance organisational operations. AI modelling of back-office processes and the creation of race event digital twins aims to reduce on-site preparation requirements and support sustainability by minimising carbon emissions.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, said: "Our expanded partnership with Google Cloud is a true game-changer for Formula E and for motorsport as a whole. We are already pushing the boundaries of technology in sport, and this Principal Partnership confirms our vision. The integration of Google Cloud's AI capabilities will unlock a new dimension of real-time performance optimization and strategic decision-making."

Tara Brady, President of Google Cloud EMEA, added: "Formula E is a hub of innovation, where milliseconds can define success. This expanded partnership is a testament to the power of Google Cloud's AI and data analytics, showing how our technology can deliver a competitive advantage in the most demanding scenarios."

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is the first FIA World Championship to operate with net-zero carbon since its inception, combining electric racing with sustainability-focused initiatives.
